Watercolor Class: A Journey for All Skill Levels

Join us for a more ways to use watercolor, led by the talented artist, Kaye Jackson.

Class Description:

Watercolor batik is a painting technique that uses hot wax as a resist with watercolor on rice paper.  The technique was more commonly used on fabric until a few years ago when an artist discovered that the bamboo in rice paper gave the artwork a really interesting texture.  It’s a fun technique that beginners as well as advanced painters can enjoy.

Artist Bio:  I grew up in a very small town, north of Dallas called “Prosper” Texas.  The school had no art program, so my only exposure to art was the “paint by number” kits that were available in the 50’s.  After graduation I got married and (real) life happened, husband, kids and nursing school.  Needless to say, I didn’t have time for painting until 16 years later.  I signed up for an off-campus class through the University of North Texas in Denton.  I remember telling the instructor that I had absolutely no talent and that I couldn’t even draw a straight line, but I really wanted to learn.  She smiled and told me that she would never ask me to draw a straight line but if I would give her 6 weeks of my time it would be in my blood forever.  I spent 2 years painting with her and she was right.  I can’t imagine what my life would be without art.  Since then, I have had many opportunities to take workshops with many wonderful artists such as Dalhart Windberg and Mark Keathley in oils, Jessie Lang for colored pencils and Mollie Jones for watercolor, but as awesome as those experiences have been, I have learned the most by trying something on my own, making mistakes and figuring out how to correct them. I love to teach and like to would love to be that “Instructor” that helps to bring out your God Given Talent! 

Important – Image transfer onto watercolor paper:

A light box will be available in the art center teaching room before the class date to allow you time to trace the class project image onto the rice paper. You may come in at your leisure to Rose City Art Gallery during business hours Tuesday-Saturday 10am to 5pm. The tracer image, paper and pen will be provided. If you have any questions regarding the tracing procedure, please contact the instructor directly at 512-577-5706.

Note: Please do not use your “good” watercolor brushes for this technique. They hold too much water for painting on Awagami Kinwashi rice paper.

#6 round brushes (Instructor likes Master’s Touch available at Hobby Lobby bu any brush will work)

1″ Wash brush (Instructor likes Aquarelle watercolor brush sold at Michael’s but any watercolor wash brush will work)

• 2 Water receptacle
• Kleenex or Paper towel
